A wide range of specialized hand tools are used for that purpose. Each of them makes the repair of a specific damage possible. They are different in shape, length and diameter metal rods, hooks (made from special resistant alloy – high quality heat-treated stainless spring steel).
There are also many ancillary tools supporting and facilitating the process of repair to the extent of the most precise and fine treatment for dents of different type and location.
The most common methods of renovation require the fixing of these tools from the inner side of the metal panel. Depending on the location of the damage, the panel is either directly accessible, or access to it is provided through window openings or by remove the internal plastic panels. An important role it that process is assigned to the numerous supporting tools that make the precise work with metal tools easier.
A specific lighting, which shows the distribution of light and shade created by the deformation, is used. It is critically important for the fine finishing. Electric tools are used rarely or not at all, the use of primer/filler coats is excluded as well as repainting the metal panel. There is no industrial waste.
Here we should mention the traditional method to deal with these dents popular in Bulgaria. For brevity called “filler-paint”, it also relies on hammering out the damaged part. The main difference between the two methods lies in the precision of processing. The rougher approach “filler-paint” distorts the original paint (removal) and requires the use of primer/filler coats, which is covered up by painting the whole part. In some cases PDR technology allows the work to be done and the removal of the plastic parts in the interior of the car is not needed, whereas in other cases only small and minor details need to be dismantled, since the tools are designed for passing through small holes.
Criteria |
PDR |
“Filler-paint” |
Time |
+ The repairs are carried out for a shorter period of time- from an average of 15 minutes for a dent to two days for a car struck by hail. | – Due to the complexity of the method, the period of the repair is measured in days, a car struck by hail reaches two weeks |
Resources |
+ More economical than the traditional method. + The repair of a single dent would cost an average of 50 lv. | – For the same damage, depending on the affected area, the repair would cost over 120 lv. and much more in more expensive cars. |
Condition of the car after the repair |
+ When the repair is well done, the original paint remains and accordingly the appearance and value of the car do not change.+ The repair is performed without the need for spraying.+ The initial condition of the car is maintained and there is also resistance to rust. | – Even with the right quality paint, the finished part is usually distinguished from the rest, the car loses some of its value. |
Mobility |
+ If desired repairs are carried out at the client. | – Due to the complexity of the method, the performance of the service is stationary and the car needs to stay in a specialized workshop. |
Environmental friendliness |
+ The technological process does not create waste. | – The removal of old paint, the use of chemicals – primer/filler coats, paint and varnish create waste, which is polluting nature. |
Possibility for repair |
– There are limitations regarding the location of the dent – it should not be at the end of panel; the place near the dent should not be processed with “filler-paint”; the entirety of the paint should not be damaged. | + There are no limitations, except for the totally damaged part. |
As shown, practically the only disadvantage of PDR technology is the range of amenable to renovation damage. However, it saves time, money and last but not least it is environmentally cleaner. Particular cases of its application are eliminating injuries caused by:
hail
careless parking falling objects (household waste, tree branches) vandalism |
